7 Ways To Just Say No To The Status Quo https://brianholmes.com/7-ways-just-say-no-status-quo/ https://brianholmes.com/7-ways-just-say-no-status-quo/#respond Wed, 16 Aug 2017 10:01:27 +0000 Val Kleppen https://brianholmes.com/?p=10171 status quo

It's a buzzword! It's a real problem! It's.....well, what is the status quo? Status quo is more of the same. If you went back to the beginning of the year and evaluated your life, your finances, your career, your marriage, relationships with your children, your spiritual life, your physical health, etc., can you say you are now further ahead in those areas?

Or would you say you've plateaued, it’s more of the same, and, for some reason, you fell back into a status quo mindset, status quo activities, and now you’re kind of stuck there?

Go All In!

status quo

It’s a buzzword! It’s a real problem! It’s…..well, what is the status quo? Status quo is more of the same. If you went back to the beginning of the year and evaluated your life, your finances, your career, your marriage, relationships with your children, your spiritual life, your physical health, etc., can you say you are now further ahead in those areas?

Or would you say you’ve plateaued, it’s more of the same, and, for some reason, you fell back into a status quo mindset, status quo activities, and now you’re kind of stuck there?

Status quo is doing the same things over and over and over again and, in some way, fantasizing something is going to change. If you keep utilizing the same factors, you’re going to always have the same outcomes.

It takes real intent and real discipline to push beyond the status quo and into unchartered areas of possibility. It takes perseverance and determination to go beyond the status quo and navigate outside the boundaries of what we’ve always had.

If you’re going to realize your dreams, accomplish your goals, do what has never been done before, you’re going to have to confront the greatest foe in your life: the status quo.

You don’t want to get comfortable with it. You don’t want to pacify it. You don’t want to accommodate the status quo. This year is about rising above. So I want to challenge you, as I give you a list of seven keys to rise above the status quo, to seriously consider what I’m sharing with you. Write down this list. When you have time yourself, do the exercises. Take notes. Journal. Ask God to give you insight as to what it is you need to do to break free from the limiting factors you’ve imposed on yourself.

Seven Ways To Just Say No To Status Quo

1: Make up your mind.

You know what you want? Make up your mind you’re going to have it, do it, accomplish it, be it. There is something about making up your mind that changes the dynamic of everything you’re dealing with.

2: Declare your “what.”

This takes discovery. It takes time. Sometimes it takes a lot of exploration and counsel and seeking. Every one of us was created for a purpose. There is something unique, something special, something in a lane we’re supposed to be engaged in, and you need to figure out what that is. Don’t spend half or three-quarters of your life trying to figure it out. No. Get help. Once you know what it is in your heart to do, declare it. State it. Own it.

3: Understand your “why.”

All of us want to create wealth. All of us want to leave an inheritance for our children. May I suggest making money is not a good “why”? I know people who have made millions of dollars, and they still have no satisfaction, no joy, no fulfillment, because they’ve never connected the dots. They’ve never understood why they’re driven or what the end game is.

4: The “stop, keep, and add” exercise.

I borrowed this from one of my dearest friends, Ray Edwards. Seasonally, maybe a couple of times year but certainly once a year, you should evaluate: What am I presently doing in my life that I need to stop doing? It’s not producing fruit. It’s not creating momentum. It’s not helping generate movement. It’s not paying dividends. What activities, what busy things are we doing we need to stop doing?

What do you need to keep – relationships, habits, activities, tasks, businesses, all those things? What needs to remain the same and be strengthened? What do I need to add? What am I not currently doing that I need to start doing and start being engaged in and start having in my life so I can grow and develop and become more of what God has created me to be? Stop, keep, add.

5: Be willing to walk away.

There are some relationships that cannot and should not go with you to the next level. If you’re wanting to rise above the status quo, there may be some people you need to leave behind. There may be some activities you need to leave behind. There may be a job or a paycheck or a career or a context that you have operated in for many years that you have to walk away from.

6: Engage a viable support system.

I cannot stress this enough. This is not a time for you to be the lone ranger or a maverick. We were not created to stand alone. You need people around you. You need advisors. You need encouragers. You need mentors. You need coaches. You need a mastermind group. You need a support system. We all do.

7: Be all in, no matter the risk or the cost.

I love watching Texas Hold ‘em. One of my favorite things I often see happen is when a player either has a tremendous, undeniable hand to play or when a player has serious skills and the ability to bluff his way to a big win. A player will take all of the chips sitting in front of them, push everything they have into the middle of the table, and say, “I’m all in.” They are going to, in that moment, risk everything they have available to play.

That’s the kind of attitude you and I have to have. You can’t be holding out and expect to win big. Now is the time for you to get off the sideline and go all in and risk everything, if necessary. Pay the big price.

Challenge the status quo. Do it, do it big, and do it today.

Right now, we're staring in the face of the oncoming fall. Perhaps school is about to start or has already started where you are. A new season is beginning which gives us all an opportunity for a new beginning.

Often times new beginnings are exciting, though sometimes they can be intimidating or overwhelming. I want to offer a challenge and also invite you to do a process with me. Winding down toward the final quarter of the year, 2017 is drawing to a close. You and I are looking at another year ending sooner than we might be ready for.

It's Not Too Late To Start Fresh

season new beginning

Right now, we’re staring in the face of the oncoming fall.

What are you going to do? Eight months of the year are nearly behind us. Have you made the kind progress you intended? Have you made progress at all? Have you, at any point during the year, been able to lock in on the new beginning you desire to see in your life? If you have, congratulations! If you haven’t, now is the time.

Here’s the process I mentioned earlier. Before the day is out, preferably right now while it’s fresh on your mind, but even if it’s before you climb into bed tonight, I’m going to ask you to get a blank sheet of paper from your printer, from a copier, wherever you can find a blank sheet of paper, free from any lines on it, even. I want you to take a few minutes and as you stare at your blank piece of paper, recognize you have within you the power to create your tomorrows, whatever you want, whatever you desire.

Pay close attention to this: God has great plans for your life. There are wonderful things in store for you. This season of your life should be and can be a breakout season for you and for your family.

Knowing and believing that, let’s go on to the next step. On your blank sheet of paper, write three things you are committed to framing in your heart as genuine, authentic expectations for what it is you will accomplish, what you will receive, what you will do and achieve this coming season. Write them down and be as specific as you need to be.

As an exercise going forward, take time every day (every week at the very least) to review your commitments. Write notes about them and journal from your heart. Hear – from God and from others – what it is you need to be doing. Get a coach. Get a group of people around you who can help you formulate the action steps necessary to make those dreams and those ideas a reality.

Don’t let the fear of the unknown scale you back in this. Step with confidence. Dream with desire. Truly let your excitement of your new beginning overshadow the doubts. Whatever you do, don’t stay where you are. Right now is an opportunity for you to create a brand new beginning. You can have and you can be whatever it is you desire to be.

I’ll say again, God has great plans for you. (Jeremiah 29:11) His plans for you are not for you to stay the same. His plans for you are not for you to remain exactly where you are and do the same things over and over and over again. His plans for you are for greatness. His plans for you are for influence and for leadership and for making an incredible impact in our world.

I hope this is encouraging you right now. Go higher. Go bigger. Do whatever you need to do to create the life that you want for you.

Let’s go after our brand new beginning!

The Importance Of Setting The Bar

expectations

I want you to humor me for a minute and do a brief exercise with me. When you think about what you want out of life, what you hope to accomplish, and the kinds of achievements you want to be proud of or remembered for, what comes to mind? Additionally, when those thoughts, dreams, or ideas come to mind, do you set expectations to achieve them, or do you somehow talk yourself out of them being possible, and make adjustments down toward something “more realistic”?

The mind is an incredibly overlooked and underutilized part of our lives. We spend so much time overthinking every situation or scenario but so little time paying attention to the very thing harboring those self-defeating thoughts. Let’s dig a little deeper into that today, as I want to talk to you about setting your expectations.

Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it will achieve, someone once said. A scripture I often talk about on my podcasts and reference in my personal reflection time is, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” (Proverbs 23:7) It’s one thing to talk about what you’d like to see happen. It’s one thing to dream and to even verbally express those dreams to your friends, to your family, to your peers.

It’s another thing entirely, however, to believe deep within your heart not only are those things possible but you will have them, you will achieve them, and you will fully realize them in your life.

Specifically, I’m talking about setting your expectations for what you really want. What do you believe is possible for you this year, and can you see yourself living it? If you set your expectations small, you’re going to get small. If you set your expectations status quo and mediocre, well, you’re going to have more of the same. If you see your future through the prism of what your results and your outcomes were last year, I promise you you’ll be fixated on a previous result, and you’ll get more of the same. You must set your expectations firmly based on what it is you believe is possible. Set your expectations firmly on what you believe is doable. Set your expectations for what you want out of your life.

The Bible says faith is your belief, the tangible substance of those things you hope for, and is evidence of the invisible. That’s crazy to me! How can you have evidence of what’s invisible? Imagine going to a court of law and wanting to admit evidence nobody could see. Yet, that is exactly how faith works and, in turn, is how we need to formulate our expectations.

You have to believe in something you haven’t yet seen. You have to believe firmly in something intangible. You have to believe it so strongly and so firmly that, to you, you don’t need any more evidence. It’s in your heart. You’ve seen it. You know it can happen. You believe it at a core level, and it will be achieved and realized in your life.

So what are you dreaming about? What are you believing for? What are you hoping for in your marriage, relationships with your children, friendships, your business, your income, your financial status, your ministry, your foundation? Can you put your faith and your expectation firmly on that basis?

Set your expectations for big things. Don’t settle for less. It’s going to be a successful, productive season if you simply believe it will be.
